2024 New York Auto Show Preview | Specialty Displays

When the 2024 New York International Auto Show opens its doors to the public on Friday, March 29, showgoers might notice a few notable brand no-shows. Well, the show must go on, and to fill the space that was once occupied by the absent manufacturers, NYIAS organizers have developed new and expanded attractions, creating an interesting mix of vintage, specialty and new automobiles.

The Javits Center is a big place – 3.3 million square feet to be exact – so a big space needs some big attractions. To give you a preview, here’s a rundown of some of the special experiences you’ll find this year.

Test Rides

EV Test Track

One of the most significant benefits of an EV is the lack of tailpipe emissions, so what better way to showcase this than a giant indoor EV test track? Show attendees can take a ride in the latest EV models with the added benefit of not being choked out by exhaust fumes.

We’ve noticed over the years that as the line-up of available EV models grows so does the size of the Test Track at NYIAS.

This year’s EV Test Track occupies a large portion of the first level and will feature vehicles from Cadillac, Chevrolet, Ford, Kia, Lexus, Nissan, VW, and Lucid. We’re excited to explore the latest EV models from GM (including the Cadillac LYRIQ and Equinox EV), as well as those from other automakers such as the Lucid Air, Kia EV9, and Lexus RZ.

Hyundai Test Track

Hyundai EV Test Track NYIAS

Since the introduction of the IONIQ 5, Hyundai has provided NYIAS attendees with the opportunity to catch a ride in this all-electric hatchback. Now, with the IONIQ family of vehicles expanding over the past few years, showgoers will have the chance to experience not only the IONIQ 5, but the high-performance IONIQ 5 N and the IONIQ 6, as well as the Hyundai KONA Electric.

Ford EV Ride

Ford also also joins the EV action with their booth showcasing EVs such as the F-150 Lightning and the Mustang Mach-E. Ford’s test track offers a unique experience that promises visitors a thrilling ride. Imagine experiencing the full power of an EV as it races inside a building toward a cinderblock wall.

One of our favorite 2022 Car Show experiences was the Ford F-100 Eluminator Concept.

Camp Jeep

Not every ride-along at the New York Auto Show is solely with EVs. At Camp Jeep there’s a diverse lineup of the brand’s rugged, off-road ready vehicles where you may find yourself in an electrified Jeep 4xe model.

Even though parent company Stellantis (Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/Alfa-Romeo) is absent from this year’s show, Camp Jeep is still happening, and thank goodness for that. It’s one of the staples of the New York Auto Show and one of the greatest auto show experiences of all time.

The first thing you see when walking up to the Javits Center is a fleet of Jeeps climbing up and down the 28-foot-tall “Jeep Mountain”. Seeing Jeeps off-roading against the backdrop of the Manhattan skyline is a bit unusual, and the expressions of awe on the faces of kids say it all. It’s hard to beat that level of brand awareness.

One tip if you’re planning on participating, don’t just ride in the Wrangler and Gladiator. It’s the smaller Jeeps such as the Compass that impress on this obstacle course and are pretty fun.

Ford Bronco Of-Roadeo Adventure Ride

The Bronco Off-Roadeo is a new attraction at the New York Auto Show this year. Like Camp Jeep, it promises to be a fun ride in Ford’s newer –and already iconic – Bronco. We can’t wait to give it a try.

Specialty Exhibits

Downey’s Dream Cars

Just like Tony Stark, award-winning actor Robert Downey Jr. shares a passion for classic cars and cutting-edge technology. These two worlds collide in the MAX series, “Downey’s Dream Cars.” The show chronicles Downey Jr’s journey to electrify his antique auto collection, with assistance from builders across the country.

The six vehicles featured on Downey’s Dream Cars will not only be on display but will also be raffled off to benefit the FootPrint Coalition. This nonprofit organization, launched by Downey Jr. and his partners, is dedicated to adopting technologies that advance human systems toward a cleaner environment.

Celebrity Vehicle Exhibit

Robert Downey Jr.’s dream cars won’t be the only celebrity vehicles on display. The Celebrity Vehicle Exhibit will also showcase vehicles owned by celebrities, such as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s customized Packard Super 8 and the first Stutz Blackhawk once owned by the King himself, Elvis Presley.

45 Years of Automotive Excellence: The Supra Exhibit at the New York Auto Show

Celebrate 45 years of the Toyota Supra and its evolution over the years.

Hometown Heros

Every year, the New York Auto Show showcases police vehicles from New York’s past and present. After Covid-19, NYIAS expanded its display to include vehicles used by NYC’s essential workers.

Various Car Club Displays

Other specialty car exhibits include the GTO, Ford Mustang, Porsche and Hot Rod Club displays.

Kids EV Driving Academy

It’s not all about the adults! Let your kids test their driving skills in a Power Wheels Jeep at the Kid’s EV Driving Academy.

Toyota Sports Festival

At this unique event, attendees are invited to participate in a series of free adaptive sports experiences, including wheelchair basketball, hand cycling, sled hockey, and skateboarding. Check out the Toyota Sports Festival Toyota Sports Festival website for more info.

I Went For The Cars; Thanks To Subaru I Left With A Pup!

Many companies talk a big game when it comes to giving back, but Subaru of America has repeatedly proven its dedication to helping find homes for the millions of animals abandoned at shelters or rescued from the streets each year.

The New York International Auto Show has gone to the dogs…for me anyway.

By Peter Ciani

Every year I schlep to the New York Auto Show to check out the new car debuts, write a few stories, post a few pictures, and then head home. Last year I did something unexpected – I ended up coming home with a puppy. Yup, not a car, a real live dog. Here’s how it happened.

Many companies talk a big game when it comes to giving back, but Subaru of America has repeatedly proven its dedication to helping find homes for the millions of animals abandoned at shelters or rescued from the streets each year.

Subaru Loves Pets is an ongoing company campaign that has raised not only millions for national and local pet organizations but has helped over 480,000 animals since its inception.

In addition to its donations, Subaru opens up space in their auto show displays around the country for their Subaru Loves Pets Adoption Drive. Shelters from the local community are invited to showcase dogs in need of a permanent home, providing both the animals and the shelters with valuable exposure to potential adopters.

This is where we found our most recent adoption Meeka — a ‘mystery’ lab mix rescued from the streets of Puerto Rico. It’s been a year since we adopted her, and despite not being a fancy show dog, she’s been a wonderful addition to our family. Surprisingly, she also loves playing in the snow, which I didn’t expect for a dog born in a tropical climate.

Subaru always puts on an impressive display at the NYIAS, showcasing their cars while highlighting the brand’s commitment to nature and its adventure-seeking customers. At the heart of this indoor/outdoor-like paradise is the Subaru Loves Pets adoption drive—a fenced-in area where show-goers can interact with potential new canine family members.

Just to be clear, the adoption area is not a petting zoo. Although some may think of it as such, it’s not. It’s an opportunity to get these dogs in the public eye and to allow families to interact with them directly. It’s one thing to see pictures of a dog on a shelter’s website; it’s another to see them in person.

Most people don’t expect to find a new pet at a car show, I know I didn’t. That’s the beauty of what Subaru and their animal-loving partners are doing.

I’d also like to give a shout-out to Zani’s Furry Friends. Although it doesn’t appear that they will be attending this year’s show, they’re the organization that went to great lengths to bring our dog there, along with many others, so that they could be adopted. Plus, they made the adoption process easy. Check them out if you are in the NYC area and are looking for a new pet.

  • Zani's Furry Friends @ 2023 NYIAS

Beyond the adoption drive, the Subaru booth also features pet-related activities, including educational seminars on responsible pet ownership and a pet photo booth where attendees can take pictures with their pets. For every photo taken, Subaru will donate to a local animal welfare organization. Subaru owners or those planning on becoming one, can also explore the automaker’s available pet-friendly accessories and features.

So, if you’re heading out to the 2024 New York Auto Show and would like to check out the pups, check out the schedule below, or visit the NYIAS website for updates.

EVs Go Mainstream At NY Auto Show

by Peter Ciani

The 2023 New York Auto Show kicked-off on Friday, April 7 and will run until Sunday, April 16th. Despite being smaller than previous years due to Covid-19 disruptions, it remains one of the best places on the East Coast to shop for new cars and check-out new car models.

Absences from major brands such as Mercedes-Benz and Volvo were notable, but the show itself is slowly coming back to life, in fact maybe more so. With a lot of brands missing, the auto show has taken advantage of the extra space and added more interactive experiences for car buyers, especially those seeking an all-electric experience.

Having 80,000 square feet of indoor EV test tracks means that auto show visitors don’t just sit in stationary cars such as the Ford F-150 Lightning, or the Hyundai IONIQ 5, but actually get to feel the power and refinement that these vehicles offer as a front seat passenger would. This is the beauty of electrification – no carbon monoxide fumes.

Not surprisingly, a majority of the new and refreshed models shown this year are battery-powered. EV technology continues to evolve, and electrification continues to expand from the more typical sedan and small SUV segments to full-size pickup truck and mid-to-large SUV segments.

Here are a few vehicles to check out if you’re planning to attend.

2024 RAM 1500 REV

As EV trucks slowly inch their way into the mainstream, early adopters are discovering that those impressive range estimates on the window sticker don’t always hold up when towing or hauling. This was one of RAM’s primary concerns when designing the all-new, all-electric RAM 1500 REV.

If a truck can’t be used as a truck, then what’s the point of said truck? With that in mind, RAM packed the 1500 REV with plenty of battery cells to counter range loss under normal working conditions. A standard 168-kilowatt-hour battery pack is expected to deliver up to 350 miles of range on a full charge, while an optional 229-kilowatt-hour battery should deliver up to 500 miles.

By comparison, the Ford F-150 Lightning delivers only 240 miles of range from a standard 98-kilowatt-hour battery and up to 320 miles of range with its optional 131-kilowatt-hour battery.

RAM also says that the 1500 REV can add up to 110 miles of range in approximately 10 minutes with standard 800-volt DC fast charging at up to 350 kilowatts – another huge advantage over the Lightning, which is limited to 150 kilowatt DC fast charging, adding up to 54 miles of range in 10 minutes with the extended-range battery.

The Rivain R1T and Ford Lightning have taken some heat in the press for their poor towing performance. If RAM’s “Premature Electrification” parody commercial is any indication they have clearly taken notice.

We’re hoping that the RAM brand can deliver on its promises. You can’t fire shots like that, then not deliver.

2024 KIA EV9

Perhaps one of the more important new models on display at this year’s auto show is the all-new Kia EV9, an all-electric 3-row SUV with rugged, yet high-tech styling and up to 300 miles of range when equipped with the optional 99.8-kilowatt-hour battery and rear-wheel drive.

Here’s why we think it deserves your attention.

In the Kia / Hyundai family, the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade have been smash hits, flying off dealership floors since their debut for the 2020 model year.

On the EV side, the Hyundai Motor Group has been making significant strides. The Hyundai IONIQ 5, Kia EV6 and Genesis GV60 are perfect examples of what this automotive group is capable of achieving, and all three models have received high praise from auto reviewers, as well as customers.

The EV9 is not only a continuation of the Kia brand’s well-executed EV initiative, but an evolution of one of the most popular vehicle segments, and an inevitable replacement for the Telluride.

With its sleek design and impressive range, the EV9 is set to make a splash in the electric vehicle market. Until now, there really hasn’t been a moderately priced, fully-electric 3-row SUV, besides the unconventional Tesla Model X, and the very cool, but premium-priced Rivian R1S

It’s clear that Kia is committed to sustainable transportation and the EV9 is another milestone in that direction.

2024 Hyundai Kona

Unlike the Hyundai IONIQ line, which uses a dedicated EV-only E-GMP platform, the redesigned Hyundai Kona continues to use a more conventional small-SUV platform that supports both electric and internal combustion powertrains. This allows Hyundai to offer a less expensive EV as they gradually transition away from ICE engines altogether.

However, “inexpensive” does not mean “cheap.” The Kona Electric is the brand’s entry-level electric vehicle and offers great value for its segment, on par with the Chevrolet Bolt and Bolt EUV in terms of available range.

The 2024 Kona was redeveloped with a focus on enhancing driving dynamics and responsive performance, with a larger platform that results in a more spacious interior.

The exterior styling has also been sharpened, with electric variants featuring a Pixelated Seamless Horizon Lamp and Pixel graphics up front.

The Kona N Line boasts more assertive styling, with body-colored fender flares and a pronounced rear spoiler. While the Kona Electric looks the part of a hot hatch, the N Line takes it to the next level.

IONIQ 5 Disney100 Platinum Concept

While we’re on a Hyundai theme, let’s give an honorable mention to the Hyundai IONIQ 5 Disney100 Platinum Concept, a car with a name as long as the line to Peter Pan’s Flight at the Magic Kingdom.

For the Disney100 Platinum edition, Hyundai has collaborated with Walt Disney World imagineers to help celebrate Disney’s 100th anniversary by creating a limited edition vehicle with special Disney-inspired visual accents inside and out.

Outside, the Disney100 Platinum edition includes Gravity Gold Matte paint, special badging, and Disney-inspired wheels. One of the coolest features of the exterior is the front and rear lamp screens that display Disney Sparkle animations. Hyundai hasn’t specified which features will make it into the production model, but I’m guessing that these won’t make the cut.

Inside, the Disney100 Platinum badging can be found on the seats and floor mats, while the inside of the moonroof glass is etched with pixie dust details. If that’s not fun enough, the interior touchscreen plays a Disney themed welcome screen with iconic music.

NEMPA Ragtop Ramble Revs #SaveTheManuals Ardor

by Peter Ciani for RPM News Weekly

Although the New England Motor Press Association Ragtop Ramble starts off as a showcase of some of the latest and greatest new cars in today’s automotive marketplace, it isn’t exactly a car show – at least not in the traditional sense. Nor is it a bevy of convertibles parading in the summer sun with their tops down. Actually, the annual event is a private road tour that kicks off from the Larz Anderson Auto Museum in Brookline Massachusetts and makes its way north to the Colony Hotel in Kennebunkport, Maine where a lobster picnic dinner awaits.

On the way, the Ramble creates an opportunity for the automotive journalists who make up the New England Motor Press to sample (i.e. test drive) some of the newer and sometimes more exciting cars on the market. This is helpful because higher-end and specialty cars often are not available for typical weeks-long evaluations.

All Photos by Peter Ciani for RPM News Weekly
(except as noted)

There used to be lots more convertibles – a.k.a.“ragtops” – in the marketplace back when this event originated. Many would take part in the drive. In that spirit the name lives on.

Gathering at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum

The day begins with breakfast on the lawn at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum. Once again, Subaru served up tasty Suburritos from a Burritomobile, assuring that no one would be driving on an empty stomach. Then, to be certain that everyone knew where the day was headed, T-shirts emblazoned with the image of a lobster were available for everyone along with a detailed roadmap.

NEMPA members, OEM reps, and Automotion staff gather outside the Larz Anderson Auto Museum in Brookline, MA for the start of the 2022 Ragtop Ramble.

If you’re a fan of automobiles in New England, then you probably are familiar with the Larz Anderson Museum. It’s home to what is recognized as the oldest car collection in America, but what distinguishes the museum from just a random assortment of old cars is that it features themed exhibits. For example, their current displays are ‘Hidden Treasures’ showcasing cars that are normally locked away in private collections, and ‘Born of Necessity’ charting the evolution of the pickup truck from makeshift, homebrew DIY farm trucks to mass production and adoption.

The Larz Anderson is also known for its monthly Cars and Coffee gatherings and themed lawn events, which include the upcoming Porsche Day, VW Transporterfest, Japanese Car Day and Extinct Car Day, just to name a few. The most recent events were Swedish Car Day and Alternative Motor Day where according to the museum website “All forms of mobility using alternative fuels are welcome!”.

Pick a Car, Any Car!

At around 8 a.m, automotive writers from around New England begin to converge on the front lawn of the museum where the cars are lined up and readied for the ride. This part of the event is sort of like a traditional car show, although it’s not advertised to the public. Nevertheless, people walking by or visiting the museum can (and do) stop and check out the cars.

For the first leg of the tour, journalists don’t get to choose the car they’ll be driving. Instead, keys are put into a so-called hat, in this case, a Cheez-Its box, and are blindly picked at random. Some of the cars up for grabs were a 70th anniversary C8 Corvette Convertible, Lexus LC Hybrid, and a Charger SRT Hellcat.

My Rides of the Day, or Should I Say, “My #SaveTheManuals Day?“

#1 – 2022 Hyundai Elantra N

I started my morning by driving to the event in the 2022 Hyundai Elantra N. Sure, it’s no modified Mustang or Hemi ‘Cuda, but the way I see it, even classic car enthusiasts need a winter ride and this car fits the bill.

Yes, it comes with some great safety and infotainment tech, but for Hyundai, the Elantra N is quite the bold offering actually. Performance equipment that one normally wouldn’t see in a budget-friendly compact sedan, such as a 276-horsepower turbocharged 2-liter engine and a crazy, manually controlled shifting device with 6 numbers on and an extra pedal on the floor – that’s what this little gem is all about.

The Elantra N also features performance brakes, chassis braces, a limited-slip differential, and an electronically controlled suspension. Not too shabby for an efficient car with a 10-year powertrain warranty and a $32,000 starting price.

#2 – 2022 Subaru WRX
2022 Subaru WRX

When it comes to modern performance cars, the Subaru WRX needs no introduction. That said, here is my personal introduction to the 2022 Subaru WRX Premium in the gorgeous WR Blue Pearl color…

This was my blind pick of the day, and I’ll admit when I first saw the Subaru logo on the key I was hoping that it belonged to the new BRZ that my partner at RPMNewsWeekly.com, Rich Taber, drove to the event. Not that I consider the WRX a second-place prize, but it would have been nice to experience the next generation BRZ, too.

2022 Subaru BRZ

The WRX is all new for 2022 and features a more rigid chassis, more technology features, and increased power. The styling of the new WRX is a bit of a controversy for fans, but I’m more concerned about the performance, and even though my time in the WRX was fairly brief, I’d say that it didn’t disappoint.

The suspension felt a little stiff while I was driving out of the Boston area, but I wouldn’t exactly call it a deal breaker. Hey, it’s a WRX. Considering that I was driving mostly on some surly stretches of Massachusetts’ roads in this part of the journey, I’d say it was still pretty comfortable.

It’s kind of sad to think that in many ways this generation of the WRX is an end-of-an-era car before they introduce some kind of electrification to the model. Don’t get me wrong, electrification is great when used properly, but it just won’t be the same.

I was surprised a bit by the price of the WRX. For some reason I was thinking it was more expensive than it is. The Premium model that I drove was on par price-wise with the Elantra N, while the base WRX sells for just under $30k. Oh, and you may have heard, that there is no STI – not yet anyway.

Thankfully, the WRX still offers a 6-speed manual. There are very few manual-transmission-equipped performance sedans, especially with AWD. If you live in New England, or anywhere else in the world that has bouts of bad weather and would like a year-round performance car, this should put the WRX at the top of your list.

#3 – 2023 Acura Integra A-Spec

Getting to swap out of the WRX at a New Hampshire rest stop and into the new Integra A-Spec was a pleasant surprise and I’ll admit, at first glance, I didn’t even realize that it was on hand. Unlike the Elantra N with its boy-racer looks and red exterior trim, or the bright blue WRX, the Integra with its somewhat understated gray exterior color known as Liquid Carbon Metallic just seemed to be hiding quietly in the background.

At first glance, the gray Liquid Carbon Metallic finish of the Acura Integra A-Spec seemed to hide the vehicle from the author’s observant eyes.

It’s no surprise that the new Integra shares a powertrain and platform with the Civic Si, but unlike the Civic Si, the Integra’s turbocharged 1.5-liter engine can be paired with a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). Nice for volume sales and all, but I’ve been talking about manual transmissions here, so fortunately, I can tell you from my test ride that the Integra has one of the smoothest shifting manuals that I’ve driven recently.

The clutch pedal itself is super light and although the 1.5-liter puts out only 200 horsepower, it certainly feels like more. Sorry, you might not be able to live your life “one quarter-mile at a time” without some mods, but at the same time the Integra sure was a blast on the curvy back roads of Maine.

The manual-equipped Integra also includes standard down-shift rev-matching. You’ll have to opt for the A-Spec with Technology package if you plan to do your own shifting, and that’s $5,000 over the base price. So, I guess you really have to be dedicated to the #savethemanuals cause.

Even though there were a few muscle cars on hand for the Ragtop Ramble, I’m glad that I got to drive other performance cars instead that represent a segment that many people including myself might not normally consider.

Here’s a look at some of the other cars that participated. Special thanks to the New England Motor Press Association, the staff at Automotion, the Larz Anderson Auto Museum, and the various manufacturers and their reps who were on hand for the day.

EVs Jump Start NY Auto Show Possibilities

2022 Auto Show Features Indoor Ride-Alongs

by Peter Ciani, Editor
RPM News Weekly

Following a two year hiatus, the New York International Auto Show kicked off last week with a smaller footprint, fewer manufacturers and a new focus on EVs. The Auto Show runs through Sunday, April 24 at the Javits Convention Center in New York City.

~ RPM News Weekly Photo by Peter Ciani ~

New-car shows have been around since the dawn of the automobile but the New York Auto show is, in fact, THE longest running, beginning in 1900. So, as you can imagine the NYIAS has seen – and survived – many ups and downs, from the Great Depression and World War II, to low points in the American auto industry and the arrival of Japanese imports.

When COVID shut everything down in 2020 and the Javits Center was turned into a makeshift hospital, it was the first time since WWII that the NY Auto Show was canceled. The show almost happened in 2021, but was canceled at the last minute out of caution due to the Delta variant. So, there remained some uncertainty that this 2022 Show would ever actually happen.

On top of COVID concerns – and with the auto industry still playing catch up because of it – the question one might ask is, “Do manufacturers really need a car show to sell vehicles right now?” More specifically, if Ford dealers are selling every Bronco they can get their hands on for thousands of dollars over MSRP and customers are waiting, does it really make sense to have some of them sitting on a car show floor?

Ford, Chevrolet, Nissan, Toyota, Subaru and Hyundai are back to answer those questions with their usual displays (perhaps with a few less cars on hand), while others like Stellantis had a much smaller showing, and brands like Mercedes-Benz, Honda and BMW didn’t show up at all.

Nevertheless, with so much empty space to fill, the absence of established brands has opened up opportunities for new and up and coming EV automakers. VinFast, a relatively new automaker from Vietnam, is a good example.

If you were compiling a list of countries with the most global EV automakers, Vietnam probably wouldn’t be the first place you would think of, yet here we are in 2022 and a Vietnamese automaker has a booth on the main show floor right between Subaru and Kia. And yes, legacy automakers should be worried, because from what we’ve seen and experienced so far, their models look mighty impressive.

RPM News Weekly Photo by Peter Ciani

Another EV startup INDI EV also has a presence at this year’s New York Auto Show with a good location, right up front near Toyota where a lot of showgoers will pass by. Granted their booth isn’t as large as VinFast’s, but they, too, have a good looking car with impressive all-electric range.

For comparison, when RPM News Weekly interviewed the folks from Lucid Motors back in 2017, their booth wasn’t in a prime spot on the main show floor, or on any show floor, they were down in the lower concourse next to a news stand.

RPM News Weekly Photo by Peter Ciani

Besides more exposure for new brands, EVs themselves are benefiting from the extra floor space. This year at NYIAS there are three indoor EV tracks. That’s one of the many benefits of an EV. If you run a bunch of them inside a building, you won’t kill anyone with emissions.

In addition to the large EV test track on the first level, Ford and Kia are also running their own EV tracks. The larger track, which is hosted by the auto show itself, offers ride-a-longs in some of the newest EVs on the market, including the VW ID.4 and the all new Nissan Aryia. You can also get a ride in pre-production models from VinFast and INDI EV.

RPM News Weekly Photo by Peter Ciani

There were three EV vehicles in particular that RPM News Weekly wanted to get into for test rides – the new Nissan Aryia, the VinFast VF 8 and the INDI EV One. Unfortunately, because of time limitations, we could only ride two so we skipped the Nissan, knowing that we’ll get another opportunity to experience it in the not too distant future.

Our first ride was in the INDI EV One. Because this was a concept car, it wouldn’t be fair to give it a top-to-bottom review right now. I will give them props though – not many automakers have the guts to let the press folks and the general public ride in a pre-production car, let alone a prototype. My first impressions of the INDI One are that the powertrain seemed smooth and the interior layout was pretty cool. The dash follows the minimalist concept that was originally pioneered by Tesla, but in the INDI One, the passenger basically gets a full-on computer. This is right on brand for INDI EV, whose focus is on in-car entertainment and connectivity.

INDI EV One readies for another ride-along.
RPM News Weekly Photo by Peter Ciani

Our next ride was in the VinFast VF 8. Not only does it look spectacular, but we were very impressed with the quality, and fit and finish on the inside.

Meanwhile, Ford is giving riders a taste of instantaneous EV torque with the F150 Lightning and KIA is offering rides in the impressive new EV6. We took rides in the F150 Lightning and Ford’s heritage-inspired 1978 Ford F100 that’s been re-fitted with a Mustang Mach E powertrain. That, my friends, was a pleasant surprise. Look for our drive impressions in an upcoming article.

In case you’re wondering, The 2022 NY Auto Show is not all BEVs all the time. Jeep is still offering ride-a-longs on their Camp Jeep obstacle course. However, we did notice that most of the Jeeps on hand were 4XE plug-in hybrid models, including the Grand Cherokee. This certainly offers show-goers a great way to see and experience how going green doesn’t affect the Jeep brand’s capability offroad. If anything, the quiet running and instant torque of the EV actually improves it.

After the ride-alongs- you might want to wander over to the Chevrolet booth for a look at the upcoming Silverado EV, which I personally think should have been called the Avalanche, or E-valanche (sorry, I’m not a marketing guy). On the other end of the spectrum, Chevrolet is also showing off the new 2023 Corvette Z06.

———–

It’s a funny thing, when the New York Auto Show got its start in 1900 automobiles were simply known as play things for the rich, and indeed they were. Now in 2022, as the future of the auto show as we know it is up in the air, the expression “play things for the rich” once again turns up, as a term some critics use to refer to Electric Vehicles. Hopefully history will repeat itself and in the year 2122 when EV tech has advanced to a level that we can’t currently imagine, a blog writer (still a thing in 2122?) will point to the boom of EV innovation that started in 2022 and the quaint old EV technology that was shown at the 2022 New York Auto Show.

EVs might just possibly save the car show as we know it thanks to their emissions free powertrains. With them, not only can manufacturers show you new models, but now they can take you for a quick zip around their booth. Could be that brands like Mercedes and Honda may end up regretting their handing the floor to the newcomers.

So, if you are heading out to the 2022 New York Auto Show, expect to see a little less from manufacturers, but also find that there are more opportunities to actually interact with the vehicles that are on hand. It’s one thing to sit in a car, but getting blasted down an indoor track in one is a whole new experience. And if you’re angrily shaking your gas-loving fist at the thought of an EV future, go for a launch in the new F150 Lightning. I’m pretty sure there aren’t any vehicles in its price range that can match its performance.

Volkswagen ID. Buzz Brings EV Honey To NYIAS

There’s been a lot of buzz about the Volkswagen I.D Buzz in the automotive press and on social media over the last few years. Now, the long-awaited all-electric family transporter finally makes the move from concept car to production ready show car at the 2022 New York International Auto Show.

It’s no big secret that Volkswagen has been aiming to up its EV game, especially after the company’s embarrassing Dieselgate scandal. Just since 2015, the company has debuted numerous EV concepts, some pretty wild – like the ID. BUGGY, a modern day revival of the 1960’s favorite Manx dune buggy. And, some more grounded – like the sleek ID. VIZZION sports-sedan. Even so, long before the diesel controversy Volkswagen had been floating the idea of bringing back the classic VW Bus. That journey started with the Microbus concept shown at the 2001 Detroit Auto Show.

Although the Microbus concept was gas-powered, it pretty much laid the groundwork for the VW van’s long road to return, and would soon be followed by multiple concepts including the all-electric Bulli in 2005, the post Dieselgate era BUDD-e, and the current ID. BUZZ. Just considering that the idea for a modern VW bus has been around for so long without coming to fruition is astonishing, and while the concept has evolved a lot in 20 years the formula remains the same: tap into VW’s history while at the same time offering buyers a cool looking compact van with tons of versatility.

It’s easy to understand why people might be skeptical of VW’s commitment to the ID. BUZZ. As noted, it has been over 20 years since they first started talking about it. Nevertheless, when spy shots of pre-production models out in the wild started turning up, I for one began to think, “Okay, maybe this time they will actually follow through with it.”

Now we can put all of that waiting behind us. On April 15, Voklswagen will debut the production ready version for real and the public will finally get its chance to see the ID. BUZZ in the flesh… er, in the metal. Up until now, Volkswagen has released pictures of only the 5-passenger, 2-row version of the Buzz, but the U.S market will get a long wheelbase edition with three rows of seats.

While passenger versions of the ID. Buzz are cool, what I’m actually interested in is the ID. Cargo, which as the name suggests, is the commercial version of the ID. Buzz that’s aimed for businesses needing a compact, all-electric delivery vehicle.

Sadly, word on the street is that we won’t see the cargo version here in the United States. That’s a shame. Last-Mile-Delivery is a prime space for EVs. Eliminating fleets of ICE (internal combustion engine) vehicles from the LMD market will provide a tremendous benefit to worldwide efforts to reduce carbon emissions. Think of all the delivery vehicles idling and slow-rolling through your neighborhood. Now think how wonderful it would be if they were all quiet and emissions free.

In any case, here at RPM News Weekly, we are looking forward to experiencing the ID. Buzz in person, and hopefully Volkswagen plans to show the long wheelbase model. For the time being, Volkswagen has taken the production design out from under lock and key, so if you can’t make it to NYC for the Auto Show, check out the digital world premiere online.
